Hi Paul,

Wollongong is about 90km south of Sydney and is known for its beachs, industry and large student population.

Accommodation has become increasily more expensive but there are plenty of beaches if you like the sand and surf.

In terms of entertainment Wollongong has restaurants, malls and the Jambaroo adventure theme park.

If you're more able to stay in Sydney proper then this Expat Arrivals page on areas and suburbs in Sydney might be valuable.
