Hi,

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to find accommodation to rent in Helsinki or the Helsinki area? Which online platforms or portals are best to use?

I've also seen that expats with residence can apply for the municipal housing, which is cheaper than renting privately. Would you recommend this?

Thanks

Hi, I've found Vuokraovi to be useful when looking for accommodation in Finland. It's good to network too, looking on social media sometimes helps to find people renting privately. Have you tried any platforms already?

As you mentioned there is municipal housing, which is cheaper but as a new arrival you may have a hard time getting in for this type of housing. Expat Arrivals has a really informative page on Accommodation in Helsinki that you should check out, it mentions other useful platforms too. It seems that although municipal housing is available, it's mainly to those that have citizenship or a residence permit of some sort and you will likely have to wait a long time and need to find private alternatives in the meantime. Have you checked out the official Helsinki city page yet?

Have a look at the neighbourhoods in and around Helsinki. I think this page on Areas and Suburbs in Helsinki can give you an idea of where to look as you may need to expand your search for property outside the Helsinki city centre.

Warm regards
