I am looking at travelling from North America to do some work in the natural gas & oil facilities in the Sapele/Oben/Amukpe/Rapele areas of Nigeria. I am a little apprehensive about potential safety concerns in these areas. Any input about safety in Nigeria would be appreciated.

Hi William Smith, the oil and gas industry is a major industry in Nigeria, as you will know. Most people moving to Nigeria have concerns about the level of safety and security in the country, so this is a valid question. Major international authorities, including the UK government, warn of conflict and terrorism concentrated in particular areas. The main regions to be wary of are in the north and northeast, but the Niger Delta, where is seems you hope to be working has also experienced issues in the past. I would like to suggest that you read this page on Safety in Nigeria and follow up with official websites such as the US Travel.State.Gov site. This will give you a good general picture and advice on how to travel safely.

Have you spoken and liased with business colleagues in Nigeria about safety concerns? Employers and colleagues can give useful advice, and, more importantly, can help you secure housing and safe transport. Accommodation for expats staying for at least a few weeks is typically in the form of secure gated complexes with 24-hour security, do you know if this will be an option for you?

Hope this helps.
