I have been offered an inter-company move from the US to Beijing. The facility is located in BDA. Does anyone know if there is residential housing in BDA or what expat communities are close by. We would be looking for a 4 bedroom townhouse/villa/detached in the 300 sq m range. Many thanks

Congrats on the job offer. Living abroad is definitely an exciting opportunity. As far as DBA in Beijing, I'm not sure what area you're talking about. What does DBA stand for? Can you give any more details on where in the city this is?

If you're looking for a 4-bedroom place like that, though, you're probably going to be looking in only a couple areas. The most popular area for villa housing is Shunyi, with gated communities like Yosemite, Capital Paradise, and River Garden. Other housing communities have various price ranges. Shunyi is on the northeast side of the city, out toward the airport. It is connected by subway line 15 and the Airport Expressway, but it's still quite a commute for those headed into the CBD area for work.  You could also look in Wangfu (north of the area called TianTongYuan). It is farther north but is often more affordable.

Also, I'd recommend that you check out this post from the blog my husband and I write specifically for newcomer's and possible-comers to Beijing: (Almost) Everything You Need to Know About Moving to Beijing. It talks about popular expat areas, as well as covering other great questions people have asked in considering a move to Beijing.

Good luck!

Kara Thank you for your response. I don't know much about BDA but that is what I can reference. Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (BDA) Located on the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Expressway, the Fifth Ring Road and the Sixth Ring Road, is situated in the eastern part of Beijing’s city development region. It is near the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan industrial circle as well as at the core of the Bohai Sea economic and industrial circle.

The BDA is south of the city. The best would be for you to live in the CBD - where a majority of expat live - and commute. The issue that will be critical to your relocation is related to the choice of schools, and there are a great number of them in the north-west side, in the outskirts of the city, or even completely further out. This is why there is a great number of expats in places like shunyi. These are really far from the BDA.
