What the school says

"At Tokyo YMCA International School(TYIS), we are proud to offer an inclusive and diverse learning environment where every student is encouraged to thrive. Our school embraces the YMCA’s core values of Encounter, Connect, and Transform, fostering meaningful relationships and personal growth.

"At TYIS, we guide students not only to excel academically but also to develop a deep awareness and appreciation for cultural diversity and global citizenship. Through a nurturing, supportive environment, we inspire students to embrace differences, build self-confidence, and cultivate respect for others.

"Our goal is to shape well-rounded individuals who can confidently navigate an interconnected world, equipped with the skills to adapt, empathise, and lead. TYIS welcomes students from all backgrounds, making us a truly international community where everyone has the opportunity to grow and succeed."

Curriculum

"Our curriculum is grounded in North American learning outcomes and content standards, including the Common Core, ensuring a cohesive learning progression across grades. This approach equips students with the knowledge and skills needed for success at every level.

"In addition to core subjects like Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, co-curricular classes such as physical education, swimming, music, art, computer skills, and Japanese enrich the student experience.

"Throughout the school year, TYIS integrates social and life skills through activities like fall and ski camps, science fairs, spelling bees, sports days, and seasonal concerts. Our professional development programme supports teacher growth in pedagogy, equity, and discipline-specific knowledge.

"With a focus on academic excellence, creativity, and global citizenship, TYIS nurtures young learners to become independent, proactive individuals prepared to contribute responsibly to the world."

Fees

Fees for the 2024/2025 academic year for all grade levels are JPY 2,046,000. There is also an annual maintenance fee of JPY 198,000.

Tuition can be paid annually or through termly instalments. The application fee for new applicants is JPY 22,000.

From the principal

"Over the past 25 years, TYIS has stood as a pillar of excellence, exemplifying what can be achieved by nurturing responsibility, confidence, resilience, well-being, and volunteerism while fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.

"Historically, pillars have symbolised greatness, marking places where extraordinary events have unfolded. TYIS is not just a school made of bricks and mortar; it is a living symbol, a pillar of possibilities. By nurturing a culture of connection and transformation, we empower each generation of learners to reach their full potential and inspire the next with a sense of awe and wonder.

"Our foundation is rooted in teamwork, shared aspirations, and a deep commitment to the greater good. This ethos has created a strong culture of family, connection, and academic excellence. Central to our success is TYIS’s unwavering commitment to recognising each student as a unique individual. We support and challenge our students to master international standards while embracing a global perspective, allowing them to graduate with a comprehensive understanding of themselves and the world around them.

"In today’s fast-paced, technologically advanced landscape, our Middle School’s one-to-one laptop programme reflects our commitment to preparing students for the complexities of the digital age. With inquiry-based learning, dynamic presentations, and project-based activities, students engage in real-world applications of their skills. Our ‘ASK’ programme further enhances individualised learning with smaller class sizes and tailored support services, breaking down barriers to success.

"None of this would be possible without our dedicated teachers, paraprofessionals, and volunteers. Through rigorous academic planning, ongoing professional development, and evidence-based instructional methods, we ensure that each student receives the highest quality education.

"As we celebrate TYIS’s 25th anniversary, we reaffirm our commitment to this remarkable community and the bright future ahead. Thank you for making our students’ dreams possible!"

– Christopher Konitz, Tokyo YMCA International School Principal
