The cost of living in Pune continues to rise as the city’s economy grows, largely thanks to its healthy IT, engineering, and manufacturing sectors.
On a global scale, and compared with other expat destinations, life in Pune is affordable. In the context of India, Pune is fairly pricey but remains much more affordable than cities like Mumbai and New Delhi, while it’s on par with Hyderabad and Kolkata.
Cost of accommodation in Pune
You will likely spend the most significant proportion of your salary on accommodation, usually about a third. Several factors, such as the type of accommodation, its size, and location, will determine how much you pay in rent.
Prices can vary widely in different areas. City-centre properties are pricier than suburban homes, but the latter will have more space to offer compared to the sometimes-cramped apartments in the metropolitan areas.

Cost of transport in Pune
You’ll most likely get around Pune by car, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, by scooter. Public transport leaves much to be desired, necessitating a personal vehicle. When shopping for a suitable car, check if any other expats leaving the city are selling theirs. It will likely have been maintained well and serviced regularly.
If you don’t want to brave the traffic yourself, you can hire a driver, a perk that companies sometimes offer to high-level executives moving to Pune for work. Taxis are another option, although this can become expensive over time.
Cost of groceries in Pune
Groceries in Pune are generally more affordable than in cities like Mumbai. Various grocery shopping options are on offer, ranging from budget to high-end. Local, in-season produce will always be cheaper than imported or out-of-season items. You can choose between chain supermarkets like DMart and local vendors when buying groceries, with the former carrying a wider selection of foods.
Cost of entertainment and eating out in Pune
There’s no shortage of entertainment options in Pune, whether you are interested in films, music, theatre, shopping, or participating in the thriving nightlife. Pune’s culinary scene is similarly diverse, with a wide range of eateries catering to varying budgets.
Street food is popular and affordable, perfect for those who are interested in trying local delicacies. Mid-range restaurants offering local and international fare are plentiful, and the prices are usually moderate. High-end restaurants and luxury dining experiences can be costly but provide gourmet dishes and excellent service. It’s also worth noting that alcohol, particularly imported brands, can significantly increase the cost of a night out.
Cost of education in Pune
If you are relocating to Pune with children, you will likely opt to send them to one of the city’s international schools. This can be an expensive option with high tuition fees, not to mention extra costs such as textbooks, uniforms, school lunches, and bus fare. Although international education can be pricey, teaching standards and facilities are often exceptional, and many expats find it makes the price worth it.
One alternative is homeschooling, which is much cheaper. While there aren’t government regulations supporting homeschooling in India, authorities won’t interfere as long as your child receives some form of basic education.

Cost of healthcare in Pune
The cost of healthcare in Pune, as with many Indian cities, can be pretty reasonable compared to Western standards, but it can vary based on the type and level of care required. Public hospitals offer free or low-cost medical services, but may lack the facilities and staff-to-patient ratio of private clinics. On the other hand, private hospitals provide more extensive services, English-speaking staff, and better facilities, but at a higher cost.
Most expats will opt for private healthcare and typically secure a comprehensive health insurance plan either privately or through their employer. Insurance can offset the costs of regular doctor visits, prescription medications, emergency treatments, and hospital stays. It is also worth noting that dental care in Pune is generally much less expensive than in many Western countries.
