Living in Riyadh as an expat
Once a small oasis known for its palm trees and dates, Riyadh has since morphed into a modern metropolis with skyscrapers that emerge from the desert like giant sandcastles. Now, expats moving to Riyadh mainly relocate there to advance their careers and earn lucrative salaries in Saudi Arabia’s commercial hub.
Working in Riyadh

Most expats moving to Riyadh do so for the benefits of working here, whether motivated by career progression, high salaries or tax-free earnings. Numerous industries rely on foreigners, particularly for managerial positions.
That being said, the job market is competitive, and with the government pushing employers to hire locally, positions aren’t always easily secured. In addition, obtaining the relevant paperwork is vital.

Cost of living in Riyadh
The cost of living in Saudi Arabia is generally in line with other major cities in the Middle East. Riyadh is the most expensive city in the Kingdom, although it remains more affordable than destinations such as Abu Dhabi in the UAE. While some aspects of life in Riyadh, such as accommodation and schooling, can be costly, day-to-day expenses are often lower than in other Gulf cities.
Fortunately, many expats move to the Kingdom on lucrative relocation packages that include allowances for housing, transport, medical insurance, and children’s education. Expats whose employers cover these expenses generally find that the overall cost of living in Saudi Arabia is manageable, allowing them to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle.

Lifestyle in Riyadh

Foreigners make up almost half of the city’s population, which can be a reassuring factor for those who are wary of its strict Islamic laws. But expats are bound to experience some culture shock in Riyadh.
The city is one of Saudi Arabia’s most conservative, and the daily rhythm of life is punctuated by the call to prayer five times a day. New arrivals may struggle to adjust to a rather restrictive social environment where alcohol is banned.
Other pastimes, such as shopping and eating out, are the main forms of entertainment in Riyadh. From palatial malls to traditional souks, there’s plenty to keep expats occupied. There’s also a surprising range of outdoor activities to enjoy, particularly in the mild winter months. And for those weekends when expats crave a time-out from the bustling city, regional travel is easy and full of places to explore.

Living in Riyadh with children
Riyadh is a great place to raise a family, with high earnings allowing parents to send their children to the best schools, not to mention taking on plenty of adventures exploring the region.
In Saudi Arabia, expat workers are mandated to have private health insurance. This is usually taken care of by the employer. That being said, Saudi Arabia’s public healthcare facilities are also considered excellent.

Finding a school in Riyadh
With local public schools being an unappealing prospect due to language and culture gaps, most expats opt to send their children to one of Riyadh’s international schools. A number of curricula are available to choose from, ranging from the British and American school systems to the globally renowned International Baccalaureate.

Finding accommodation in Riyadh
Most Western expats live in residential compounds in the northern and eastern suburbs of Riyadh. In some of them, life is more liberal than the general situation might suggest. Men and women socialise more freely in these self-contained developments, which have all the modern amenities expats might need, including shops, gyms, tennis courts and schools.

Climate in Riyadh
The climate is a challenging factor; summer temperatures can skyrocket to more than 122°F (50°C), and the dry winds that blow through the city are often accompanied by a haze of sand. Winters in Riyadh are mild, with average temperatures around 64°F (18°C).
Climate Charts for Saudi Arabia
Despite its glitzy malls and futuristic architecture, Riyadh is very much a traditional Arab city. If the ancient mosques dotting its tree-lined highways aren’t enough of a reminder, the strict adherence to Islamic law will be. Moving to Riyadh can be a challenging experience for some, but it can also be not only financially rewarding but also culturally enriching for expats who approach it with an open mind.
What do expats say about living in Riyadh?
"Through the years, Saudi Arabia has been subjected to lazy stereotyping. It’s important to be open to the move and as frivolous as it may sound, a lot is based on that positive approach. The country is under cultural transformation for the better with liberal laws, especially for expats living in Riyadh (which has traditionally been more conservative compared to cities like Jeddah and Dammam). In my opinion, it’s an ideal time to live in Riyadh to be able to experience this interesting cultural transition."
