Culturally and religiously diverse, New Delhi, India’s capital, is also one of its most affordable cities. When moving to Delhi, expect to live comfortably at a cost that is significantly lower than in many major global cities like New York, London and Sydney.
Mercer’s 2024 Cost of Living Survey ranks New Delhi as the 165th most expensive city out of 226 surveyed, making it more affordable than Mumbai but pricier than Chennai and Bengaluru.
Cost of accommodation in Delhi
Accommodation in Delhi is likely to be one of your most significant expenses. If you’re accustomed to paying rent in cities like New York, London or Hong Kong, housing costs in Delhi, even in upscale areas, will generally feel more reasonable. However, for those moving from smaller Indian cities or towns, prices in central or sought-after areas might seem steep. Rent becomes more affordable as you move further from the centre of Delhi, making it easier to find budget-friendly options.
You’ll also need to budget for utilities such as electricity, water and building maintenance. These costs may be less expensive than in many Western cities but could be higher than in other parts of India.
Cost of transport in Delhi
Getting around in Delhi is relatively easy and affordable, thanks to a comprehensive bus and metro system. If you’re coming from a city like London or Tokyo, public transportation costs in Delhi will likely feel very low. Even if you’re familiar with other major Indian cities, Delhi’s metro system offers a cost-effective and efficient way to get around.
However, the bus system can feel crowded and less comfortable during peak hours. Cycle and auto rickshaws provide a more adventurous and budget-friendly alternative to taxis, but haggling over the fare is part of the experience.
Cost of groceries in Delhi
For daily essentials, Delhi offers a range of grocery shopping options to suit different budgets and lifestyles. Compared to cities like New York, Paris or Singapore, the cost of locally sourced fruits, vegetables and staples such as rice and wheat will feel significantly lower. If you’re used to prices in smaller Indian cities, the cost of groceries in high-end supermarkets or for imported goods may seem higher. Local markets offering fresh produce at very affordable prices are an excellent way to keep your grocery bills down.
Cost of eating out and entertainment in Delhi
As India’s capital, Delhi offers an eclectic yet highly affordable nightlife and entertainment scene. Compared to global cities like New York, London or Dubai, eating out and entertainment in Delhi will feel incredibly affordable, whether you’re enjoying street food or dining at high-end restaurants.
If you’re used to the vibrant but costly nightlife in cities like Sydney or Los Angeles, you’ll likely find Delhi’s offerings to be both diverse and budget-friendly. Even high-end dining and entertainment options, while more expensive by local standards, will seem like a bargain compared to many Western cities.
Cost of education in Delhi
One of the most significant expenses you’ll face as a parent will be private school or international school fees. Compared to top-tier schools in cities like New York, London or Dubai, Delhi’s tuition fees will likely feel more reasonable. However, if you’re coming from a smaller city or a country with subsidised education, these costs could feel quite high. It’s essential to consider additional expenses like uniforms, extracurricular activities and textbooks, which can add up.
Cost of healthcare in Delhi
India’s public healthcare system is generally considered inadequate, so private health insurance is a necessity when moving to Delhi. If you’re used to healthcare costs in the United States, the premiums and out-of-pocket expenses in Delhi will likely feel much lower. However, compared to other parts of India, the cost of comprehensive health insurance in Delhi might seem higher, particularly if you’re seeking high-end private care.

What is the cost of living in Delhi like for expats?
"The cost of living is relatively cheap, and India is one of the cheapest countries I’ve been to. There are some items, however, that are quite expensive compared to the local standards, such as chocolate, meat (and meat-based products), cigarettes, alcohol, etc. The price for vegetables and different kinds of street food or snacks, on the other hand, is extremely cheap and something everyone can afford."
