The cost of living in Delhi, India’s capital, is lower than in many comparable cities in North America or Europe. When moving to Delhi, expect to live comfortably at a cost that is significantly lower than in many major global cities. That being said, costs for education, healthcare, and accommodation can add up. Budgeting carefully and negotiating allowances with your employer can help manage expenses.
Cost of accommodation in Delhi
Accommodation in Delhi is likely to be one of your most significant expenses. If you’re accustomed to paying rent in top international cities, housing costs in Delhi, even in upscale areas, will generally feel more reasonable. However, for those moving from smaller Indian cities or towns, prices in central or sought-after areas might seem steep. Rent becomes more affordable as you move further from the city centre, making it easier to find budget-friendly options.
You’ll also need to budget for utilities such as electricity, water, and building maintenance. These costs may be less expensive than in many Western cities, but could be higher than in other parts of India.

Cost of transport in Delhi
Getting around in Delhi is relatively easy and affordable, thanks to an extensive bus and metro system. Even if you’re familiar with other major Indian cities, Delhi’s metro system offers a cost-effective and efficient way to get around.
On the other hand, the bus system can feel crowded and less comfortable during peak hours. Cycle and auto rickshaws provide a more adventurous and budget-friendly alternative to taxis, and haggling over the fare and being enveloped in the chaos is part of the experience.
Cost of groceries in Delhi
For daily essentials, Delhi offers a range of grocery shopping options to suit different budgets and lifestyles. The cost of locally sourced fruits, vegetables, and staples such as rice and wheat is relatively low. Local markets offering fresh produce at very affordable prices are an excellent way to keep your grocery bills down. Expect to pay more for imported foodstuffs at high-end supermarkets.
Cost of eating out and entertainment in Delhi
As India’s capital, Delhi offers an eclectic yet highly affordable nightlife and entertainment scene. Compared to many large cities across the globe, eating out and entertainment in Delhi will feel incredibly affordable, whether you’re enjoying street food or dining at high-end restaurants.
Delhi’s nightlife offerings are both diverse and budget-friendly. Even high-end dining and entertainment options, while more expensive by local standards, will seem like a bargain to many expats.
Cost of education in Delhi
One of the most significant expenses you’ll face as a parent will be fees for private or international schools. In addition to tuition, it’s essential to consider additional expenses like uniforms, extracurricular activities, and textbooks, which can add up. Another challenge associated with private education in Delhi is the high demand for these institutions – apply to your preferred school well in advance of your arrival.

Cost of healthcare in Delhi
India’s public healthcare system may not be up to the standard you expect, making pricey private healthcare your only option when considering medical costs in Delhi. In order to access high-quality private hospitals, you’ll need insurance, which, fortunately, is often provided by employers when hiring expats. Be sure to include either an international health insurance policy or a healthcare allowance when negotiating your employment contract.

What do expats say about the cost of living in Delhi?
"The cost of living is relatively cheap, and India is one of the cheapest countries I’ve been to. There are some items, however, that are quite expensive compared to the local standards, such as chocolate, meat (and meat-based products), cigarettes, alcohol, etc. The price for vegetables and different kinds of street food or snacks, on the other hand, is extremely cheap and something everyone can afford."
