This question has probably been asked before - if so please point me to the relevant discussion!

I have been offered a job in Nairobi and hope to relocate in January.

It is with a social enterprise so the salary is not high and my wife will need to work somehow to make ends meet.

Looking briefly at the immigration policy this seems hard to do. She is not a member of a prescribed profession and does not have a job offer.

Are there any suggestions/advice on how it can work, or do most people who relocate rely on a single income?

Hi there,

Your wife will need a job offer in order to attain a work permit and, even then, good jobs may be hard to find without the necessary skills or an employer who is willing to support her permit application. That said, there are many platforms on which she can search for a job, and once an offer is in place, the company or her employer will assist her with attaining a work permit.

LinkedIn or other job portals are a good place to begin a job search. Local Facebook groups may also be helpful for networking with local Kenyan's or expats in the country who may have an idea of available jobs in Nairobi. Alternatively, if you are able to, she could search for a job when you arrive in the country. This is risky as work permits take time to be processed but, depending on how tight money is, this could allow for her to assess all of her available options and possibly land a good job through networking.

I recommend taking a look at our work permits for Kenya page for more information and about the different permits available in the country.

I hope this helps!
