Hi Liz,

When are you planning to move to Houston?

Children in Texas start kindergarten in the year that they will be 5 years old by September, but pre-K can be started as early as 3 years old. You will probably have to pay tuition fees. As for the best areas, this will likely be influenced by the area you work in and the school/s you choose. For some ideas, see the Expat Arrivals guide for Areas and Suburbs in Houston.

Liz, Katy has a good public school system. Public schools here are available without tuition for kindergarten through 12th grade, sometimes pre-K programs are also available but that varies from school to school. Most of your questions can be answered by reviewing their website at http://katyisd.org. The Houston Association of Realtors has a terrific site at www.har.com that will help narrow down a search for the right neighborhood to either buy or rent a home here. Have you tried asking your husband's employer for assistance in finding the right neighborhood?
