Hi there,

My wife got a job in Dallas, Texas and we moving across the pond from the UK in January 2014. I am a bit concerned as we are moving with our 9 year old son. What are the schooling options available to us as expats in the USA ? What are the standard of schools ? Our son has been a high achiever academically, and we were planning on having him take the 11+ in the UK to get into a better school. Will such options be available in Dallas ?

Just worried because I don't want him to be held back or disrupted as a result of this move.

Appreciate your answers.

Hi Jonny,

Dallas is a pretty family-friendly city and you'll find lots of schooling options for your son.

The standard of public schools can vary so it is worth checking out some reviews and trying to get hold of parents who have kids at schools in Dallas to get some input. Also check out the  AEIS reports for schools.

In Dallas, as in much of the US, you child eligibility to attend a particular school will depend on you having a residential address within a particular school district. So you will need to explore schooling option before deciding where to live.

You can look into the option of sending you child to a charter or magnet school, this schools are public schools but offer a higher standard of teaching and magnet schools award places to children on academic merit, similar to the grammer schools system in the UK.

For a more detailed overview, check out the Education and Schools in Dallas page .

Good luck.
