Hi,

I am moving from Australia to Frankfurt in the next couple of months with my family (husband and 3 kids) and we were after some guidance with schooling. The international schools are a bit out of our price range and were wondering what the other options were for a 3 and 5 year old. Are the public primary school zoned like they are in Australia? Also, how to the bilingual schools work? We are currently looking at the surrounding areas for living rather than in the CBD but any thoughts on that would be much appreciated also.

Thank you in advance, we don't speak German (yet!) so we are feeling rather overwhelmed with the whole process and would love some insight!

Hi Anna,

From this Expat Arrivals page on education and schools in Frankfurt, it seems like bilingual schools might be your best bet but that places at these schools are competitive, so it might be worth applying to some as soon as possible.

This Expat Arrivals page on education and schooling in Germany will have lots of information overlaps with the previously linked page, but it should be informative to read over.

Public schools in Germany do use a 'zoning' or 'area catchment' system. As such, the schools in the more affluent areas tend to have better results. Despite this, education in Germany is generally pretty good.

Your kids are young enough to pick up German fairly quickly, so public schools might be a good option. There might be ways to immerse them in a bit of German before you leave?

Thanks so much for this information Kyle, much appreciated! I will check out those web pages and start looking at the schools - it difficult as we wont know where we are living until we arrive which makes early applications for schools difficult.

Thanks again,

Anna
