How has Christchurch changed since the earthquake?

For sure, most info about moving to Christchurch will be outdated due to the earthquake. The city was beautiful and vibrant pre-earthquake and its citizens are committed to rebuilding an even more amazing metropolis. The largest changes are the facts that the CBD is inaccessible and the public transport system is kaput. Most businesses have moved to the suburbs and for expats moving to Christchurch it's essential to buy a car for the time being. Otherwise, the economy has certainly slowed down, but if your husband already has a job offer this shouldn't be such a concern.

Hi, I have been living in Chch now for 10months, and the city is constantly changing. Accommodation is still at a shortage and therefore rental prices are artificially high in some places. There is a lot of housing developments being built though, especially in the outer suburbs, and many people choose to live out on the edge of the city as a result. Generally the city centre as such is a dusty (de)construction site full of cranes, but there has been so much effort to lighten and brighten the city up, that there a lot of temporary art installations popping up, as well as unique shopping precincts and unusual cafes and bars. The council is managing to maintain the public spaces in good order, and there are plenty of malls for all your shopping and entertainment needs. Once you get past the initial shock of what the city centre looks like, it is a fascinating and enjoyable place to live. Within reach are beaches, parks and recreation reserves for outdoor activities, plus plenty of places within easy reach for day trips and longer, such as Akaroa, Hanmer Springs, and Kaikoura. The airport also acts as a gateway to multiple NZ cities as well as Australia and beyond. Hope that helps!
