Hi,

I am busy planning my move to Adelaide, Australia at the end of this year. I am wondering if anyone can recommend a good suburb for me to live in. I am a single guy, so a one-bedroom place will be perfect. I'd like to be close to the centre of town so I can get to work quickly. If there is a chance of being close to the beach, that would also be great (as that is a big part of my reason for moving to Oz)

Also, I'd rather not buy a car unless it is absolutley neccessary, so I'd like to live in an area with good access to public transport. I am quite an active guy, so I even happy to cycle to work if it is not to far. Can anyone tell me how cyclist-friendly the city is ?

Any advice or experiences would be much appreciated.

Tx

Hi Wallace, Adelaide is relatively small city compared to the likes of Sydney or Melbourne and there are a number of areas situated relatively close to the CBD that may suit your lifestyle and budget. Burnside and Kensington Gardens are two areas that are popular with active types as they offer a number of parks and reserves for hiking. Brompton is an area of Adelaide popular with the younger crowd and may ne a good option for a single guy like yourself as it has an active social scene with a number of bars and restaurants. If you're looking for something a bit closer to the beach try Glenelg and Brighton. I suggest having a look at our pages on Accommodation in Adelaide and Areas and Suburbs of Adelaide to read more about the different areas of the city and the option for accommodation. Public transport in Adelaide is adequate but not extensive. You should get away with not having to buy a car if living pretty close to the city centre. There are bus routes servicing most areas as well as tram and train connections around the city. While the locals love to cycle in Adelaide, designated cycling lanes and routes are not always available. Have a look at our Getting Around Adelaide page for more on the transport options in the city.

As mentioned above Glenelg would be ideal - it has a tram service directly in to the City but is very close to the beach, Henley is also good for public transport into the City (between 25 and 35 minutes on a bus, and they run less than every 15 minutes) there are also good areas for shopping and hanging out at in both of those suburbs. They have just rolled out an Oyster style card which can be used on buses, trams and trains and is a relatively cheap method of getting around. Anything on the east of the city will be much harder to get to the beach, especially without a car but does have better access to the hills and reserves for walking. The Linear Park runs right across the City from the hills to the beach at Henley South, is relatively flat and easy riding. There are some cycle paths on the roads and cycling is an accepted form of transport here - and definitely something they are working at promoting. North Adelaide (which is actually an area just north of the city centre not a genreal suburb miles north) is really close to the centre and would be a half hour-ish bike ride to the beach along the Linear Park. I hope this is useful.
