I have been living in Italy for 3 weeks on a 12 month 'elective residence' visa. I have submitted my permesso siogiorno and my appointment with Questura is scheduled for 25 August 2014. I have obtained a Codice Fiscale, opened a bank account and rented an apartment. My question is how do I buy a car. I've been told I need a Resident Card, which will not be issued until after my Questura appointment. Does anyone know of a way around this (without having an Italian resident buy the car for me)? Warm regards Tim.

Unfortunatley, you are required to have a residence permit to buy a car in Italy, You will also need and tax number, ID and insurnace.
You should try contacting the Agenzia di Pratiche Auto. They can assist you with the process, and they do sometimes make arrangements for non-residents to purchase vehicles. Hopefully they can assist you.
In the meantime, until you get a car sorted read the Transport and Driving in Italy page to help you find some alternative ways for getting around.
