Hello - we are an American couple who will be heading to London in July. Where are the best areas to live, that are safe and convenient for work, my office will be in the West End.

It depends very much on budget and priorities. The public transport in London is very good (when there’s not a tube strike) so it’s quick to get around. If you have a high budget, Notting Hill and Holland Park are very good options. They have extremely nice houses and apartments and wonderful restaurants and are near to some great parks – Kensington Gardens and Holland Park. There are also some good schools.

Some expats decide to live in Chiswick, which has more of a village feel. Again, lots of good shops and restaurants but more suburban. Quick to get into Central London, but much cheaper than Notting Hill.

Knightsbridge, Chelsea and South Ken are also some of the best areas to live in London, and are very central and convenient for the West End, but also eye-wateringly expensive if you want a spacious property.

Some Americans choose to live in St. John’s Wood, as there’s a good American school there – The American School in London. Fulham is also popular, more affordable but still nice. South of the river, Battersea has some nice properties, and is just a short taxi ride away from Chelsea, with regular buses to the West End. Expat Arrivals has a good overview of the best areas to live in London.
