I am a UK citizen resident in Italy. I have rented property in the UK and pay the difference between UK and Italian tax on my taxable income. Mario Monte introduced IVIE tax on property owned overseas. Our tenants pay the Council Tax on our UK property to the UK local council. We are now being asked by the Italian Agenzia Entrata to pay IVIE tax on our UK property too. Surely this is unfair. It's double taxation. Does anybody know if it is right for us to pay IVIE? Does anybody know how this tax is calculated? The Italian Agenzia Entrata don't seem able to answer my questions. The don't seem to understand the legislation themselves!

Hi Aleks and Chris,

There are double taxation agreements between the UK and Italy which stop expats being taxed in both their home country and abraod. So if you contact the tax authorities in the UK, they should be able to let you know if you are eligable for a tax refund.

As tax laws change almost every year, I would also advise you to contact a tax professional for the latest information.

Good luck.

well italy has agreements on double taxation with a number of EU states, including the UK. It also has poorly informed civil servants, and I wonder is it time to begin complaining en masse to one's MEP. The lack of adequate info, actually acts as a barrier to equality. What is equally alarming with regard to buying a car in Italy is the fact that third party insurance doesn't medical bills or have I understood this incorrectly. Re double taxation, check the Irish Citizens Information site, leaving ireland, moving to another EU country, and double taxation should be listed, I would imagine something similar with the UK's Cit Adv Bureau website. It does raise the question around the legality of taxing property and income abroad (the Irish also introduced this) and how that works under the double taxation agreements.
