Can you extend your tourist visa once you reach Portugal ? For example: if you land in Portugal with schengan visitors visa can you apply for its extension for 3 years by paying a fee? And if yes then is that visa valid throughout Europe.. If this is a possibilty kindly tell the procedure..

Thanks Shivam

Hi Shivam,

From what I can see a Schengen visa is granted for 90 days and during this period you can travel wherever you within the Schengen territories. After this period you have to leave Schengen territory for a period of at least 180 days before you are allowed to re-enter. Visa extensions cannot be applied for within a Schengen country, like Portugal.

You may want to look into the options of getting a residence visa if you plan on staying in Portugal for longer than 3 months.

Read more on the Visas for Portugal page.

Good luck

Hello Shantalie, Thanks for your response, I think residence visa will be the right suite to me, I am not a skilled worker in any trade and not highly qualified, is there any other way to get a residence visa in any Schengen country? If you could tell, that will be great. Regards Shivam

Remaining legally in Europe's Schengen zone for over 90 days is not easy if you do not have a long-term visa. In these times of great global and domestic economic uncertainty, even if you are a student, it is becoming more difficult for non-EU citizens to acquire the coveted long-term visa. However, Portugal is one the few Schengen countries to make things a little more simple for those who have long-term ambitions. If you do decide to go for a long-term visa, Portugal accepts a variety of reasons for “purpose of stay” besides being a student or working for a Portuguese company. You can be involved in an internship, work as a volunteer for a nationally recognized organization, or be engaged in academic, scientific or otherwise highly skilled research. If your stay does not fall under any of the above categories, you should know that Portugal also allows not one, but two extensions of the 90-day tourist visa. Technically, this means that you could stay on in Portugal for a consecutive period of nine months without even thinking about a long-term visa. Although the first extension is simple enough to obtain, it is the second extension that is trickier, as it requires a solid purpose of stay. http://www.simplysafety.com.sg
