Salary requirements for a comfortable life in Udaipur

I have a tentative offer for a job as an instructional designer in Udaipur, Rajasthan. I don't know what perks, if any, are included at this point, but the recruiter said I should expect to make 1/10th to 1/12th of the salary I would be paid for this type of work in the US. Since I would make between $50k and $70k in the US for this work, he is essentially telling me I would only make the equivalent of $5k to $7k USD doing the same work in Udaipur. At the high end, this would equal about 375,000 rupees. Does this sound accurate, in terms of his estimation of my salary needs in Udaipur? Can I make a comfortable living (quasi-US-style) for a salary that low? Or does it sound like he's trying to short-change me? Keep in mind that I have a Master's degree and roughly 25 years of experience in Instructional Design/e-learning/adult education. Jeff S.

Is it 375000($7K) per month? 7K USD per month in India in any city would be very good . A 3BHK would be approx 12-15k INR per month and you can expect to save 325000+ per month . Udaipur is a cheaper city compared to Mumbai or Delhi. If you can save more in your country , then it's an easy decision for you.

Hi Jeff,

The salary the company has offered you does seem to be pretty decent. However, whether it is enough for you to survive and have a comfortable life will depend on the lifestyle you are used to.

I would advise you to have a look at the Expat Arrival's Cost of Living in India page to get an overview of the relative expenses you can expect.

Using the exchange rate of Rs 54 to $1 in the U.S., 375,000 rupees works out to be about $6,944 USD. Based on Jeff's estimated U.S. salary of $50,000 to $70,000 USD,this would be a yearly salary amount. (The average yearly salary for instructional designers in the United States is around $66,000 USD.) So in the Udaipur job offer, his monthly salary would be around $579 USD or around Rs 31,250 INR per month. If he goes alone, he might be happy living as a paying guest with food provided. If he brings family with him or prefers more privacy and likes to cook, he would probably need a service apartment. With utilities, food, transportation, phone, computer, medical insurance, cost to furnish an apartment, and so forth, would that be enough for a person to live without financial worry for day-to-day life in Udaipur?
