We are considering moving with our young sons to Caldas de Reinha, where we've bought a house. We have no mortgage/loans to pay, so how much would we need to get by every month(roughly)? We are far from extravagant.
Secondly, how easy is it to get our sons, aged 3 and 5, onto school waiting lists and how long will it take them to adjust to the new school monolingual environment?I am Indian, my husband is Irish and we live in the UAE, so they are used to being moved around.

Portugal isn't as expensive as other European countries and expats earning euros or pounds should live quite comfortably in any of its cities or towns.

Many sources say that a monthly income of around 2,000 euros a month will afford you a basic but pleasant lifestyle. Because you won't have to pay accommodation costs, you will have a bigger disposable income to spend on things like food and entertainment. If you decide to send your sons to a public school, you will save on annual fees as these schools are free to all residents of Portugal. If you'd rather have them educated at a private or international school, you can expect to pay upwards of 2,000 euros a term. Read our section on education in Portugal to find out more.

You can also save money by choosing public transport over driving a car. Visit our cost of living in Portugal section to find out more details.

Good luck - and let us know how the move goes!
