Job Scams in Nigeria - is this a genuine job offer ?

Hi Pawan,

I can't verify wether the company is real or not. But you are probably wise to ask the question because there are a lot of scams like this that go around and originate from Nigeria.Maybe try and speak to existing employees of the company. If you have any contacts in Nigeria already they may also be able to help.

With regards to the cost of living in Nigeria, expenses for expats is very high. You are lucky to be provided with accommodation, transport and health insurance provided. Take a look at our Cost of Living in Nigeria  page to work out a budget and work out how much you will be able to save.

Actually i dont have not any refrences there in LAGOS even not in whole nigeria state.. my question is how can i find out about this company even m not getting any clue as my joining date is 29th april 2103. after i have called up to the given number as well which was mentioned in my soft copy of offer letter they were saying yes it is mentus biscuit company, and when i said i need to speak with HR co-ordinator name is - Mr.Mathew Kaki Paul.(HR Coordinator) Mentus Biscuit Nig Ltd. then he replied like process your visa first and then will send you the air ticket and hard copy of offer letter to your address, so please help me on this since i cannot judge whether its real or fake and dont have any refrence there to get it resolved successfully. i am requesting you shantalie, pleaase can you have a check once on this for me.. please. please.. Hi Pawan, I have been in Lagos for over a year and will like to help you on this as I have a lot of contacts there. Advice. First of all, for the visa you should only deal with the embassy in your country. You need a STR visa to be able to work in Nigeria and the company has to provide you with the documentation for the embassy. Please confirm to me the name of the company so I can ask people over there. Wish I help a bit Enis

Hi Pawan, Would like to help you on this. I have been in Lagos for more then a year I have a lot of contacts there. Please confirm the name of the company. ADVICE : do not proceed any visa with anybody except nigerian embassy. You need a STR visa ( google to find out more) to work on Nigeria and for this the company should send you documentation for procedure. Do not send any money to the person , later he may ask you for the passport. Enis

Thanks anis, Company name is Mentus biscuit Nig.Ltd. and they are not asking for any money to deposit.rather just saying go for visa process and given me the details to contact for it to the BRANCH: SHANTIPATH, CHANAKYAPURI NEW DELHI INDIA. Also they said clearly i have to bare the VISA fees they will not interfere on it. apart from it they will take care all of others such as: air ticket and as soon as i will apply for visa then they will send the air ticket and hard copy of offer letter with all the details to my india address.. If you are still unsure about the company I would have a look at Fraud International's Website - it contains a list of the latest scams that have come to light. A lot of those originate from Nigeria.

The Expat Arrivals page on Salaries in Nigeria  has some information on 419 scams in Nigeria too. You need to ask yourself if the job offer is too good to be true ? Is it in line with the job offers you've had in the past ? If you salary is USD 31,800 per month that is a huge salary so maybe give it a little bit more consideration before you part with the money.

Thanks Shantalie. yes, Thats true it is huge as i m thinking. But first they offered me with very less and after that i negotiating to company and requested to make it approx 35,000$ Per Month. so they finally agreed on 31,400$ per month. So, I am bit confused about it that how can i find out about this company whether its legitimate or not. Hello Pawan, While I am waiting for the feedback from my friends I would like to say a world as Shantalie mentioned already about salary. If this is what thay offer you then don't be very enthusiastic about it. A Nigerian citizen to get the money that you going to take for a month need to work at least 1 1/2 year. Anyway I would like to add that also about the legal representative, if this is accredited by the embassy then probably he is not using @yahoo email adress and also if you google it nothing found even the adress itself not known by google map??? Pawan, 1) 31K/MTH is a huge salary works out to approx 360 K/MTH. tOP LEVEL EXPATS IN oil companies get that salary in Nigeria. 2)Nonetheless assuming that you are capable of that salary, some checks are a) Has there been a proper interview process(I mean detailed professional grilling) & not a wishy washy interview. The interview should give you the feeling that the interviewer knows what is required. b) Normally employers pay for the workpermit/visa charges, however if the Organisation wants you submit the visa fees at Nigeria embassy in Delhi, go ahead do it. & then observe how other things are moving, I mean do you haveto pay for travel, immediate accomodation in the first 15-20 days. Visa fees are much lighter than thse costs(max Rs 5000). So after paying your visa fees, you smell something fishy, withdraw from the process. You will be poorer by Rs 5-6000,rather than couple of lakhs. Keep us posted, my plans to Nigeria may also take place shortly.

Hi Pawan, below the answer from Lagos. Brg Enis The company does not look real. No contact address or telephone. I have checked with my people, no person seems to know this company. Their name is not listed among the biscuits company in lagos. Wish it will help
