I am about to take up a post in Riyadh and would like some advice please: 1. I have a housing allowance of approx 140,000 SAR. I would be looking for a 2/3 bed villa in a compound. Please can you let me have details ie: contacts names and numbers of compounds that are suitable for me, my wife and 4 year old daughter. 2. Are dogs allowed on the compounds? 3. Is there a cycling group in Riyadh? 4. How is life on the compounds for ladies. I would like to get some idea for my wife. 5. A rather general idea of life in Riyadh would also be most welcome. Many thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards, Andrew

Hi Andrew, while I can't recommend a specific compound in Riyadh, I suggest having a look at our Accommodation in Riyadh page for a list of compounds in the city. Also have a look at our Accommodation in Saudi Arabia page which gives some general tips on finding a compound in the Kingdom. You should also chat to your company representative and colleagues in Saudi Arabia, who should be able to give you some more guidance as to the best compounds in Riyadh to suit your needs and budget.

Different rules apply to different compounds with regards to pets and the facilities which they provide for families and entertainment. Women's rights are restricted in Saudi Arabia, but within a compound, you'll find that your wife will have more freedoms than she will outside of the complex, and there is generally a sense of community amongst the wives, who often have social gatherings and support groups for each other. To read more about what you can expect in terms of the culture and women in the Kingdom, please have a look at our Culture shock in Saudi Arabia and Women in Saudi Arabia pages. For other general info about Riyadh, check out our Riyadh expat guide.

There is no better way to learn about what life in Saudi is really like than to hear from expats living there, so have a read through som of our interviews we've conducted with expats there on our Expat Experiences in Saudi Arabia page.

Good luck with your relocation and house hunt! I hope it all goes well for you!
