I'm considering taking up an engineering position in Zambia, but with a recurring health problem which requires frequent visits to the doctor, I'm a bit worried about whether I'll be able to get decent healthcare in Zambia. I have heard so many different stories about public vs pruvate hospitalsand what I can expect of medical facilities there. Anyone out there who has experienced the Zambian healthcare system who can give me some insights???

Hi Sally, the healthcare system in Zambia is variable, depending on where in the country you are. While there are some decent private hospitals in Lusaka, if you're going to be in a more rural area, you may struggle to find even the most basic medical facility. Any serious medical emergencies may see you being transferred to a neighbouring country like South Africa, or abroad, where there are better facilities.

I guess it depends on the severity of your medical condition and how often you'll need to visit a doctor. If possible, you should try bring a sufficient supply of your medication with you - but make sure you have an official doctor's note and script to show to border officials, if you get stopped.
