Moving to Zambia - Is life better for expats in Choma or Lusaka?

Hello, We are going to live and work for 3 years in Zambia. We will be leaving around the 20th of April for Zambia. Work will be mainly in Choma and Lusaka. We can choose where to live Lusaka or Choma. Any advise is welcome. We have a slight preference to Choma, as we like the rural and we will be visiting Lusaka enough for work and we can combine with socializing and buying some goods. Is it difficult to find an adequate house with 2,3 bedrooms in Choma and a little garden? Or is this easier in Lusaka? Is there a lot of difference pricewise in renting a house in Lusaka or Choma? How is the internet connection in Choma compared to Lusaka? What would be recommended to take? A machine to bake your own bread? Some spices? Pots and pans? I have no idea. A bycicle and what type? Furniture? A good bed?Washing machine? Or is it all available in Zambia. Is it costly to buy it in Zambia? What is the quality if you buy in Zambia?

Hi Sonja,

With Lusaka being th capital of Zambia you will probably find it is better equipped for expat life. I think it might be best for you to start life there and settle into life in your new country. But accommodation is probably going to be more expensive. Use the Cost of Living in Zambia page to find out more about your everyday expenses.

Most of the items you need will be available in Zambia but at a premium. If your company is willing to foot the bill for shipping and you are willing to wait for your goods to arrive, the shipping is an option. But remeber Zambia is landlocked so you might need to have things air-frieghted in.
