Good day all,
I am looking for advice on hospitals and healthcare in Qatar. I have seen that public healthcare in Doha is largely subsidised, if not free. Is that true, and, if so, how can I access the state healthcare system? Is the health card quite easy to get?
As an expat, will I need to arrange for my medical insurance by myself in Doha and is it really necessary if I already have a health card? Which would you recommend, public or private healthcare in Qatar?
Thank you in advance.

Hello Taylor, both public and private healthcare in Qatar are of an excellent standard. Public healthcare in Qatar is managed by the Hamad Medical Corporation, and it is easy to access once you have a health card. Qatar's health card is simple to get, it's a relatively quick process and much of the information can be found online. Many applicants go to a public hospital or healthcare centre to obtain their card. You will be charged a fee for this, but then you're guaranteed subsidised medical treatment during your expat stay. For more on this, read our guide to Healthcare in Qatar.
Emergency care is generally free though you would pay nominal charges for tests, consultations and inpatient care, at a lower rate than private care.
Medical care in private hospitals generally comes at a much higher cost, though some aspects of it you may personally prefer, such as shorter waiting times. Ultimately it is up to you, your preferences and how affordable you find private care. Do note that with private hospitals, health insurance is a must. Your employer may organise for this, have you had a discussion with your employing company in Qatar about a potential benefit package?
Hope that helps you when making a decision about medical options in Qatar.
