Hi,

I was hoping some expat parents living in Berlin could give me some advice. My husbad and I are looking to move to Berlin from New York in the next six months as he due to take up a new position. We are relocating with our children who are 3 and 5 years old.

They are both young so I really want to give them the best foundation education. We are not sure of our plans, but it is likely we will stay in Germany for at least 3 years. Are there any schools where the kids would be able to study the US curriculum but also learn German. I think it is important for them to learn the local language so they can get by in every day life.

Your thoughts on the best international schools in Berlin would be appriciated. Please give me advice on waiting lists and the admissions procedure as well.

Thanks

Hi GlobalNomad,

Anonymous is right in saying that the international school fees in Berlin are quite steep. There is however, a lot of choice in the city. Take a look at the International Schools in Berlin for a comprehensive list of options.

I'd also recommend you read our the general Expat Arrival's page on Education and Schools in Berlin as this gives you a good overview of the German schooling system, and includes information on both public and private schools in Berlin.

Best of luck with your move to Berlin.

Hi, there is a british but also an american school in Berlin in the west part of Berlin. The John F. Kennedy school is the biggest international school. I advise you to take one of those and check, if possibly a board from parents. There you can find out if or what kind of problems the school has. Berlin is, sorry to say that, not the best place for schooling unless you pay a lot. Good luck!

Hi I recently read that there's a massive shortage of schooling on offer for expats. I wondered if Berlin share this problem; I'd love to hear any insights you have to share? Thanks!

Hi Anonymous,

Generally speaking Berlin doesn't have a shortage of international schools available. Berlin actually has a lot of choice for expats with children.

However, depending on the type of school you are hoping to send your child to and the curriculum you want them to follow, you might experience long waiting lists.

If you are planning on moving to Berlin soon I'd recommend you have a read of our International Schools in Berlin page. Once you've chosen the schools that suit the needs of your child then you should arrange an appointment to visit the school and make you applications as soon as possible to secure your place.
