I'm a dual British/Australian citizen returning to U.K. after 50 years. I'm in my late 50's & will need to find work ASAP in office admin or suchlike. How hard will this be? Is there an ageist mentality in the U.K. I'm a bit nervous about making such a big move

Hey Anonymous,

Unfortunately, I don't think that's likely to be possible. Aberdeen is known for being expensive and the rent alone could be 1000GBP or more. Have a look at this link for more info and specifics.

Chrissy - The UK has legislation which prevents discrimination based on your age and employers are not allowed to refer to your age during the recruitment process (although this can become relevant if you are required to have a medical). In the UK CVs should not contain information relating to your age/DOB, marital status, religion, sexual orientation. With regards actual practice it really comes down to how relevant your work experience is to the job you are applying for - UK employers may want you to demonstrate a cultural understanding of the environment in which you will work, eg if it is a public/health sector job have you worked in the public or health sector in another country? Over 50s employment is generally good but will depend on where you are settling in the UK - some areas with depressed/flat economy will have few employment opportunities for anyone. You are more likely to be (legally) discriminated against on the grounds of no relevant experience than your age - so do your research and tailor your CV to match potential employers.

Rentals in Aberdeen generally start around £500pm for one person - and in the region of £900pm for larger, very modest accommodation. £985 will not get you far in Aberdeen as food costs, travel and the essential heating costs (it can very cold in Aberdeen) will easily exceed that amount, even in the summer. You will really need to early in excess of £1700pm.
