Which areas of Doha are most suitable for newly arrived expat families?

Doha is a strange city in the way that there's really no "good" or "bad" places to stay. The expat community is massive and so is spread throughout a nymber of different neighbourhoods. If you want to be in close proximity to all the regular amenities you should consider Al Waab, but then you'll have to suffer the traffic. If you don't mind being a bit farther away, West Bay is a great place to live without all the congestion and noise.

Compounds can vary considerably in standard, so have a look if you can and decide which suits you best. Prices also range tremendously. A low-end villa or aparmtent can cost over 3000 USD and a high-end villa as much as 8,000 USD.

I realised in my last post, I omitted some crucial information about choosing an area in Qatar. Beyond all else, it's most important to be close to your workplace, so you can minimise your time twiddling thumbs in traffic (Qatar enjoys an all-day RUSH HOUR)...

If you are thinking of relocating to Doha, very simple STAY AWAY! Worst place to live in the Gulf, just pick Dubai or Abu Dhabi

Can I cancel my current visa in Quatar and apply for another one?

I have Qatar work visa which I didn't use because I changed my passport. Is it possible to cancel that visa and apply for a new visa? How long will it take?

Hi Petaz,

Cancelling a visa seems pretty straight forward in Qatar. To cancel a visa, or for exit permit, you may complete an application online at the Interior Ministry website, MOI self-service machine, or you may personally submit the application form at General Directorate for Borders Passports and Expat Affairs, or at the immigration offices located near your area.
