Just read an article on Arabian News from Sept 2011 warning westerners that an unidentified terrorist group in Riyadh may be planning to kidnap US citizens. Can anyone advise what safety precautions should be taken?

While the US Embassy in Riyadh did indeed issue a warning cautioning Americans about potential kidnappings, it's important to remember that the city has been safe and secure for expats for some time. That said, if you want to be extra vigilante about your safety in Saudi Arabia follow the guidelines below:

1. Don't travel alone; make sure you have someone with you when going shopping or driving
2. Visit only busy, high traffic public places
3. Make sure your car is problem-free, and that you have a good GPS system
4. Avoid altercations with locals
5. If someone approaches you as a police officer or authority figure, ask for credentials before you follow  their orders
