Can I use US dollars to pay for things in Canada? I'm talking hard cash, not plastic...

Yes, a lot of places will allow you to spend US dollars in Canada, but this is not an absolute rule. Also, you'll get a really terrible exchange rate. So, even if it's a bit more of a hassle, I'd recommend missioning down to one of the MANY foreign exchange bureaus and just converting there.

No - only in tourist areas and, as the previous poster mentioned, the exchange rate will not be in your favour.. Just go to any bank and they'll exchange your USD for you.

Most places can take US cash -- but it may be a hassle outside tourist areas as they don't do it very often. You'll also lose big time on the exchange rate. Stop at any bank in Canada and switch your greenbacks to loonies (you'll get more for your dollar if you do this in Canada).
