i am a chinese.i just can provide some advice to you in my opinion. 1.If you wanna rent an apartment.i think expates should contact agent.it is convenient. 2.To open a utility accout.you must prepare some files.you should take passport by your side. 3:There are many economy hotel in shanghai,beijing,guangzhou and so on.you can find them quickly. 4:if you want to live in china for a long time.I must remind many expats.Facebook has been blocked in china.So you must download sever proxy.Flyvpn.com can help you.if you wanna keep contact with your friend.

Wether the place is comfortable or not for living may depend on the weather. If you prefer cold weather, you can go to the north part of China, for example, Harbin. The Ice festival in Harbin is really good. See more info. http://www.icefestivalharbin.com/
