I'm moving to Bangkok in June and was wondering if I need to buy a car once I'm there. Does anyone know anything about the public transport system in Thailand?

Hi Global Nomad

When moving to Bangkok you should try and find accommodation as close to your place of work as possible. This is because Bangkok has some of the worst traffic in the world!

Driving in Bangkok is a slow and frustrating process so I would say, no, you do not need a car in Bangkok. There are numerous public transport options such as the Sky Train, the underground, buses and taxis. It would be wise to situate yourself within walking distance of an underground or Sky Train station to save on a long daily commute.

For more information about public transport in Bangkok have a look at our Getting around in Bangkok page.

Car is useful for our distance reaching but it is expensive and risky too. In spite of huge amount of people want to buy a car for their comfortable transportation. I think buying a car has to need involve with auto insurance policy for safety. Thanks! http://bilprovning.se/

Do not buy a car in Bangkok unless you plan to travel out of the city to surrounding areas. For speed and efficiency take The Bangkok Transport System or the Metro. Taxis are cheap and plentiful and acceptable for the few hours in the day that there is light traffic. And you can take boats or motorcycles or tuk tuks if you want adventure. Cars are not cheap, though insurance and registration and licensing all all very reasonable. Drivers do not speed, but motorcycles on the road make travel interesting especially if you are not used to driving on the left side of the road. Use your car budget for other forms of travel.
