Hi Sir/Ma'am,

I'm a Chinese who just got an offer to work in Dubai as a manager responsible for telecommunication equipment installation.

I was infected with hepatitis B before. Even though my body has cleared the hepatitis B virus on its own, I don't know whether the UAE government will permit me to work there. The following is my blood test result in China: HBsAg 0.02 ng/ml Negative HbsAb 52.63 mIU/ml Positive HBeAg 0.09 PEI U/ml Negative HBeAb 0.6 PEI U/ml Positive HBcAb >4.050 PEI U/ml Positive

1. I heard that gulf countries only test the HBsAg level for hepatitis B.
2. Do you know the situation in Qatar, because I'll first get skill training in Doha if I am good to work in Dubai.
3. Please tell me whether this result is Okay;
4. Or please give me a phone number/email address where I can get the information I need.

Thank you very much for your time! Looking forward to your reply.

Best regards!

Hello there

This is quite a complicted issue that's been discussed on our forums many times. Have a read through this thread to see what people who have personally gone through this have to say about the regulations with regards to hepatitis B in Dubai.

While I am not sure which test exactly they use, expats moving to Dubai are required to take a hepatitis B test. This is especially true for people from countries which constitute the majority of the emirate's labour classes such as India, Pakistan, Indonesia and Sri Lanka etc.

Officially, it seems that hepatitis B is only an issue for people working in professions that have a lot of human contact, such as in the restaurant industry and hairdressers etc. That said, many people have their applications rejected because they have hepatitis B anyway.

Unfortunately I'm not qualified to give medical advice, but if your doctor says you no longer have hepatitis B, and if you're able to get a vaccination for the illness even if you've had it before, your chances might improve. It also helps that you're not from one of the countries mentioned above.

The only advice I can give is to look into doing the required health checks before going over. Have a look at the official Dubai government portal to help in this regard.

Best of luck

Xavier

Dear Xavier, Thank you for you advice. I know it is still very probable that hepatitis B carriers would be deported. So I'm trying to know more about Dubai's blood test, even though a hep b carrier should not be deported under the new rules. I checked on the Internet and made more than 20 calls to Dubai, but I simply could not get any substantial information on Dubai's blood test. Can you kindly give me contact information of someone who knows Dubai's hepatitis B test very well? Cellphone number(not tel.), Skype account/Email address would be very appreciated. I really want to know whether I'll be considered a hep B patient by Dubai government. This is very important because the cost would be too high and I don't want to take the risk of being rejected. Thank you again! Best regards.

For UAE Residence visa the blood test is limited to HIV, HbsAg and Syphilis. Only in case of active form of Hepatitis B-residence visa can be refused. Not active form of Hepatitis B are allowed to work in UAE

Hi Anon,

Whether they will allow you to remain in the country after testing positive for Hep B, will depend on your field of work - usually Hep B only becomes an issue with fields like medicine or catering. However, the matter is not clear cut in the UAE - and it sometimes depends on your employer, so I'd advise you to discuss this matter with them.

Good luck
