Hi! I'm from Mexico and I'm moving to Pretoria next june. I'm very worried because I've heard some comments about security, I have been told that using public transportation is very dangerous and that I shouldn't be alone at night nearby University (I'm going to do mi PhD in the University of Pretoria). I would like to know If all of this is true, should I consider buying a car? is the university an insecure space? Thank you!

Thanks for your question! Safety is a definite concern for many expats in South Africa, though you'll find that some areas are generally safer than others. Pretoria is generally safe, but as with many cities in the world it's best not to travel alone at night or through certain areas during the day.
You'll be able to find more information on our Safety in South Africa page.
Regarding transport, you will most likely need a car ot get around. Most public transport throughout the country is lacking in infrastructure and is not the safest, especially when travelling alone or at night.
You'll find more comprehensive information on our Transport and Driving in South Africa page.
I hope this has been helpful and wish you all the best for your time in the rainbow nation!
Regards,
Bradley
