Honestly, most people who choose to work or teach in China are at different extremes of the wage scales. If you are a professional scientist or technician you can expect to earn over $100,000 a year in China. If however, you are a teacher, you will be the lowest paid expat in the country -earning about $25,000 a year on average. But for China a $25,000 salary will provide you a comfortable life - unless you have student loans or a mortgage to pay off back in your homeland.
To see the complete and current pay scales for expats working in China, just visit http://www.chinaforeignteachersunion.org and you will even find a built in calculator that will show your before and after tax earnings which varies by the Province you work in. Some are much better than others.
