I'm a back-end web developer and am looking to move to Hong Kong to make some cash, save and move back to South Africa with some big earnings. What's kind of salary can I expect to make, with that in mind?

First off, the cost of living in Hong Kong is high, and there's always something incredible to spend your money on, so be prepared to be disciplined if you want to save.

If you're a back-end developer with a few years experience, I would say don't settle for less than 25,000 HKD a month.

You can anticipate spending at least 12,000 HKD on accommodation, that will get you a pretty spartan two-room flat somewhere near the city centre, but outside of Mid-Levels. Then you won't need a car and you can rely on transport, the MTR is affordable and efficient. Otherwise, food costs can be cheap, and many times you can even find street food for much cheaper than the cost of cooking.

You should get some form of health insurance, but otherwise, you won't have any other expenses.

Hi, I may be getting a position in Hong Kong and my salary is a little over 50,000 sterling year, (609,501.01HKD) Is this a salary good enough to live fairly well and save too?

This does seem like a good salary to live farely well in HK and to save too! You can read more about expat salaries in HK on our Salaries for Expats in Hong Kong page. You can also look at our Costs of Living in Hong Kong page which will give you a good idea of what things will cost you in the region.

Hi, I've been offered a media/comms manager role with a global law firm opening up shop in HK. I've been told the salary is equivalent to $140K Australian. Where would this sit in terms of lifestyle and savings capacity with two school-aged kids (8 & 12).
