Can tourists access public healthcare in Mexico? I see that citizens and residents can access it but does this depend on the type of visa you are travelling on or the residence permit you hold?

Hi Smith,

Residents and citizens in Mexico are entitled to universal healthcare, but as a tourist you will likely have to use private healthcare options and be covered by private insurance. This is not to say a public hospital won't treat you, but you will probably have to pay up-front and have insurance cover. Still, medical costs are much lower than in other countries and you can find useful info on your options in Expat Arrival's guide to Healthcare in Mexico, which talks about public and private options.

Hope that helps!

Hello - I'd say you should get health insurance if travelling to Mexico, the public healthcare is fine, but most American tourists would want to head to a private hospital or clinic. You will also get seen much quicker. If you are moving to live in Mexico, you should get international health insurance, which will be better value long-term.
