Been hearing mixed things? Is healthcare in Norway free or are there co-payments and small fees charged here and there?

Hi there- Though all citizens and expat residents of Norway are entitled to healthcare, it's not completely free - contrary to popular idea. Healthcare in Norway is greatly subsidized by the government, but it's still necessary to pay a small fixed fee (works kind of like a deductible) that changes annually. Once you pay this fee, then you get a "free card" called a frikort and you won't have to pay anymore for the entire year.

Hi! I have two questions: 1. As a temporary resident (skilled worker) what can I expect in terms of health care? Should I keep my American health insurance? (I hope not!) 2. I have prescription medication that I need to take daily. How can I get this prescription in Norway? Thanks very much!

Hi Anonymous

If you're on a work permit or a study permit in Norway you do have access to the social security system and therefore the health system. Just make sure you go to state hospitals and not private ones.

I'm not 100% sure, but I really think you'll be able to get a prescription in Norway from your new GP (depending on what it is perhaps). It'd be wise to bring along a letter from your current doctor when you go to Norway and medical records (if you can) to explain your condition and what you've been taking for it.

if your an American citizen and retired with pension and health insurance is it possible to migrate to Norway if you you are half Norwegian?

To the retired person:

It depends - do you have family living there now? If not, I'm pretty sure the only way to retire in Norway would be to work there for a substantial amount of time first. But maybe you should just book an appointment at an embassy or with a visa company to ask if there are any loopholes.
