my husband has got a job offer in Johannesburg. We wish to understand how much salary will be a good salary for a family of 2 and a new born baby. thanks.

Hi Nidhi, the salary that you require to have a good living in Johannesburg will depend a lot on your own lifestyle and the type of accommodation you'll be looking at and of course the area in the city you'll be staying. Baby products don't come cheap in South Africa, as in most countries, and medical expenses can also add up if you don't have private medical aid - which is a must in South Africa if you don't want to have to sit in queues at government hospitals. As anonymous above indicated, a take home of at least 23K should allow you to live comfortably - but again, your lifetsyle would generally influence this - Have a look at our Cost of Living in South Africa page to see what you can expect to pay for most of your basics. USD 3500 equates to around ZAR 37,000. This is a pretty good salary for you and your wife to live on comfortably, but this also depends on your lifestyle. Your biggest expense is going to be accommodation which will cost you around ZAR 10,000. You can use the Cost of Living in Johannesburg page for more guidance.

accommodation -This must be old 10k for a good suburb?? is a vehicle included?? if you want good education, its private 100K + p/a Cost of living?? compared to what? even day care is expensive and I would not cheep out on this? Levies? travel, fuel, public transport is not great and would still generally constitute a long walk, location? Position applied for? Healthcare?
