Hey all. I got a job in Qatar as a translator for 12K a month, a third (4K) of which is housing allowance. Salary is tax free, but is the amount good enough to live comfortably?
After looking at the cost of living and other pages here, it seems inevitable that I have to hire a car, and that's at least another 2,500 QAR.
Am I wrong to believe the pay is a bit on the lower side?

While the cost of living in Qatar is lower than other places in the Middle East, it is by no means a cheap place to live. I do think that salary is a little on the low side, especially if you are looking to save something at the end of each month.
The minimum you'll for accomodation is QAR 3,500 and that is if you are willing to share a place. As you've already read, public transport in Qatar is pretty much non existant.
I would advise to take a look at this article on A comparison of salaries in the Middle East. I think it will give you an idea if the salary you've been offered is fair.Much of the rest will depend on your personal preferences and lifestyle.
Don't be afraid to go back to the employer and negotiate for a higher salary. If you've got the required experience, they should be willing to pay you more.
Good luck. I hope it all works out for you.
