It's definitely worth having your own car when living in the city - public transport, while available, is not always that reliable or safe. Joburg drivers can be a bit erratic, so you should drive with care and defensively, especially if near minibus taxis on the roads, who are the frequent cause of accidents.

I agree with Catherine - you will want to live close to where your husband works, because Joburg traffic can be a nightmare, especially during rush hour. If you're worried about safety, look at one of the many larger "security estates" which are fenced in and guarded. This is especially a good option for families with children, because the children can pretty much move around inside the estate without a problem. If you don't have kids and are looking for a smaller place, there are many apartment complexes with good security as well. Hello! I am from Germany and will be working in Johannesburg (Alberton) for 3 weeks. I'll bring my husband and my two daughters (aged 1 and 3). I found a nice-looking B&B which is located in Craighall Park. Does anybody know this suburb? Is it safe to stay there? Do you have any recommendations for a nice and safe place to stay with a family which is closer to Alberton? All tipps/recommendation are highly welcome!!!
