Good day. Could someone advise me on the best areas to move to in Lagos? I have family friends who stayed in Abuja, but other people I have spoken to express their concerns about personal safety in the country. I read your page on Safety in Nigeria and found it very helpful! It puts all my worries into perspective and describes the key regions where security is of heightened concern and gives important safety tips.
I would like to take the best precautions, such as looking for accommodation with security measures, 24-hour security cameras, electric fencing etc. However, this is within a budget! I understand the cost of living in Lagos is exorbitant and this is a worry of mine. I would like to explore different real estate options but don’t know where to begin. What are the recommended neighbourhoods to stay in and how can I find suitable yet affordable accommodation in Lagos?
Thanks for any information!

Hi Smith! Thank you for your comment on our Safety in Nigeria page! Our guide to Nigeria aims to equip our readers with all the essential info to help them relocate, and I am glad it helped you start planning your move! Lagos is expensive, particularly in terms of rent. This is compounded by the fact that several months of rent are typically demanded upfront and so you will have to think carefully about this. However, some neighbourhoods are more expensive than others, and some areas boast mega-mansions while others host standard apartments. Expats typically live on the islands, Lagos Island, or the areas of Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki.
These areas are typically safer/have greater safety measures but are also pricier. The mainland neighbourhoods offer more affordable options. Check out or page on Areas and Suburbs in Lagos for a description of what the best neighbourhoods have to offer. I would also recommend that you explore online portals and find a real estate agent. I hope this helps!
