We're moving to Hong Kong in November, and we'd really love to bring "Pickle", our honorary fifth family member with. I see that quarantine is not required to bring a dog to Hong Kong, but can anyone with pets give us an indication of how pet-friendly the city is? Contrary to his title, Pickle is a very rambunctios (and overweight) labrador.

Hong Kong is sort of pet-friendly; the main issue will be your living arrangement. Space comes at a premium in this special administrative region, and if you live in any one of the high-rise apartments in the city centre, chances are "pickle" will find himself in a pickle. That said, if you've managed to secure a lucrative employment package and a gorgeous expat salary, you may be able to find accommodation in Repulse Bay, Stanley, Mid-Levels East or Jardine's Lookout. All of these areas tend to afford expats a bit more space, and are near a tinge of greenery (though in many cases dogs are not allowed in city parks).

Discovery Bay or another one of the outlying islands is actually best for dog ownership, but that's the ideal talking.

Do note that you're not allowed to bring dogs on public transportation in Hong Kong, except on ferries and in private taxis.

It will roughly cost you 500 HKD to import your dog to Hong Kong. You say you don't need to quarantine your dog, but double-check this, depending on where your dog is coming from, it may be required.

Hello. We have 4 rescue dogs so we know Hong Kong quite well, as a starting point I would suggest picking up a copy of the Woof Guide to Hong Kong, http://goo.gl/Z3sqx or check out, www.woofguide.org Hope that helps, but please feel free to drop me an email, alibullock@gmail.com and we'll take you out for a dog walk! Best to Pickle from us all. ali

Good Morning-- I am coming from Connecticut this summer and question what a dogs life would be in Hong Kong. I have a gorgeous Lab who is a huge part of my life and my family and I could not dream about parting with him. Question, do dogs have to be quarantined and do they have to wear mussles? Allegra

I see many cities in China have a one dog per family law. Is there a limit on dogs I can bring into Hong Kong?

Hi Anonymous

In China you are allowed to import only one pet per Z visa (work visa), but Hong Kong is a special administrative region and so has different visa laws and customs regulations. I know you can bring more than one pet with you, but I'm not sure exactly how many the limit is (I assume there IS a limit and you can't import an entire farm of animals!) The problem is your accommodation is likely to be smaller than it is back home, so you should think about whether your pet(s) will be able to cope with less space.
