What are public hospitals in Saudi Arabia like? Do I need to get health insurance in Saudi, or will I have full access to free public healthcare there as an expat?

Hi JennyK, it's a legal requirement that all non-Saudi nationals have medical insurance, so you definitely are going to have to arrange this before you move there. Most companies cover this cost for their expat employees so you should try ensure that this is mentioned during your contract negotiations.

Healthcare in Saudi Arabia is of a high standard, and you'll have access to both public and private facilities, but it certainly won't be free. Most expats stick to the private hospitals, which can be very expensive. Many of doctors and nurses are in fact expats themselves, so you may even find yourself treated by staff from your home country. Healthcare in Saudi Arabia is great, but it's expensive - you definitely have to have comprehensive health insurance, and you should get your company to pay for this!
