Hey Jas,

Firstly, when applying for visas for South Africa you'll need to start by deciding which visa catergorty in right for you. Have you already got a job lined? What is your reason for being in South Africa. Read about the different types of visa available on the Visas for South Africa page. Once you've narrowed it down, you'll need to obtain the relavent forms and documents and make your application through the Department of Home Affairs.

With regards to taxes in South Africa, you will need to register with SARS. If you have a job, your employer should be able to set this up for you. If you are working freelance, you can go to the SARS office in Jo'burg with the necessary documents and obtain a tax number.

Good luck,

Shantalie

Hi Jas. Dealing with Home Affairs in South Africa, to sort out your visa student visa or work permit can be a minefield and a nightmare which is why many people hire a visa or immigration agency to help.

If you are being sent over by a big company, they will deal with it and pay for the immigration agency.

Otherwise, if you have the time, patience and inclination, it is worth doing it yourself, just be prepared for multiple visits to Home Affairs. Read up as much information as possible before you go.
