Neighbourhood recommendation for family moving to HK?

We are moving to HK with 2 kids - 7 and 5yrs. Planning to send the 7yr old to the Australian School. Just want to find out what are the recommended places to stay which are close to the school.

Hi there,
Welcome to Hong Kong! We moved just over a year ago so do get in touch if you have any other moving related questions.

In terms of where to live then Kowloon Tong is certainly the best bet in terms of proximity to the school. You will have a somewhat more 'local' experience living there than most expats who base themselves on the island and never leave it, which to my mind is a good thing!
You may feel a little bit hemmed in there, so if you wanted to be closer to the water then Huang Hom is a short distance from Kowloon Tong and has a good number of expats too and plenty of shopping etc on the doorstep.

Depending on the salary package with which you're moving to Hong Kong, I would say the best place to live in close proximity to the Australian International School is Kowloon Tong. This residential area is not as overpopulated as some of the areas associated with Hong Kong Island, and it services mid to upper-class individuals. There's a lot of expats who make this space home, as there are plenty of international schools nearby.

There's also an MTR stop nearby, and Festival Walk, a mega mall with all the modern shopping options you'll need, is in the area.

Do you mean Australian International School? Kowloon Tong is quite a reputable residential area. You could choose to stay on Beacon Hill or Kadoorie Hill, both rather pricey but close to the school. can anyone recommend good schools in Hong Kong. We are moving there in JUly and the Australian International sch (which our son attends in Singapore now)is full with a long waitlist.... Which sch he goes to will dictate where we live so we have to get it sorted asap.. any help would be gratefully appreciated. Siobhan

I Just found out we are moving to Hong Kong in July. Our son is 7yrs and attends the Australian International sch (AIS) in Singapore. But AIS in HK are full and have a huge waitlist. Can anyone recommend schools to me.... I'd appreciate any help at all, thanks Siobhan

There are lots of International Schools around town, but with even more kids trying to get in, so a huge waitlist to any International Schools would be a common lament amongst expat parents. It is pretty much the same case with English Foundation Schools (http://www.esf.edu.hk/) as well, which was traditionally for the British children that came with the government officials, but now are dominated by locals. Your best bet is just to try and register with every International School in town if your son doesn't speak Cantonese, but honestly there isn't much of an immediate solution.

If you are being relocated by work sometimes your company may be able to help. Some workplaces have debentures at international schools so do speak to your employer if that's relevant for you. There are many international schools in HK that aren't always so well known so make sure you try all of the not so common ones as well.

If you are still looking for a place to move. You can consider living in village house, since they are bigger, usually around 650 sq. ft., 3 bedrooms, and with greenery surrounding. My mum has actually one in Shatin, looking for professionals, expat teachers preffered, to rent(long term). Take a look at this site: http://hongkong.craigslist.hk/apa/5065843101.html Kowloon Tong is 2 MTR stations from Shatin. My mum's house is facing a valley, with fresh air, think you might like it.
