Is it a life partner permit or spousal visa for South Africa ?
If you are in a relationship with a South African citizen or married to one, you are usually allowed to apply for a work endorsement on your visa.
In the case of a life partner/spousal permit the employer will not need to prove that they have tried to hire a local first). So, one you have an offer letter simply take that to Home Affairs.
I am not 100% sure how long it will take for them to process the endorsement - but it will be at least 30 days. But be aware that it is common to hear expats complaining about how long Home Affairs takes to process visas in South Africa. I know people who've waited over a year to receive their permits.
Bear in mind, this visa doesn't give you the freedom to chop and change jobs quickly. The endorsement will be tied to a specific company and position, if you want to change employers you need to go back to Home Affairs and ask them to amend the work endorsement.
Take a look at this this thread - you'll see there are lots of people in a similar position to you.
Also take a look at our Visas for South Africa and Work Permits for South Africa for more detailed information.
Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask anymore questions because it was not too long ago I was in the exact same position as you.
Cheers,
Shantalie
