is there a such thing as Sufficient Traveller's Fund fee to have on you to be able to leave nigeria. A supposed girlfriend has told me she has to have a required amount on her for safe travel from nigeria to the USA called Sufficient Traveller's Fund. She got me email from embassy and the guy wrote back that she does. I have also emailed on my own other places and got replys also stating you have to be able to show 6 months of accounts or statements assuring you can be able to leave the country of nigeria. SHe told me she was working for unicef being down there until we have been talking for quite sometime and wanted to come see me instead of following unicef. I sent her some money to finish flight ticket which she sent me copy of electronic ticket purchase online. then proceeded to say she still had to see immigation before leaving nigeria. was told to hold on her person Sufficient Traveller's Fund this is a token sum of amount that She must have on her before she can be allowed to leave the shore of the Country there, This fee is not to be spent or paid to anyone, it is just to be shown to the Nigerian Immigration at the airport that she won't get stranded when she get to the stage of departure and incase of emergency use. I have looked up her flight booking number on actual airlines website and it does show up as true. curious is anyone knows of this and replys would be helpful. thank you

Hi there, I'm afraid to say that this is most likely a scam. This is a very common scam originating from Nigeria where scammers form a romantic connection online and then start to request funds for different things, including a so-called request for funds to leave the country when claiming that they have booked the ticket to come visit you. Many of these criminals spend a lot of time laying the groundwork to carry out these scams and that is why there may be a papertrail, such as legitimate flight numbers, presented, which makes it hard to believe that they are not telling the truth. I hope you manage to find out more about the girl you are corresponding with, and I hope for your sake that you have not lost too much money. Good luck!

hmm it may be a scam but it sounds very similar to a situation that has happened to a friend of mine. he found a lovely lady thru a dating website who was of spanish and australian decent. lives in joliet illinois. a volunteer thru unicef and would love to meet him. her name is angela garcia anf he said hes sent thousands of dollars to her to help with many things and he even told me that now she is asking for a STF before she is allowed to leave nigeria.

Hello, I have been in a similar situation as described by jhouse327 above, except that the 'supposed girlfriend' was not in Nigeria but in Malaysia instead. In fact the story just happened a few days ago. That girl was supposed to board a BA flight from KL to London but on that day she called me in panic crying and shouting that in did not inform her about the Sufficient Travellers Fund. She wanted me to send her asap $4500 so that she could go through immigration and board the next flight. The similarities with the story of Jhouse327 are quite outstanding: - I have been chatting with that girl for a couple of months - She pretends to work for an organization affiliated with Unicef - I sent her some money to purchase a flight ticket, and she sent me the flight booking and details which were true because I could indeed verify those myself on the British Airways website. There is troubling details also that reveals a link to some Nigerian gang (if I may say so), the day she missed her flight because of those 'STF', in fact I missed the calls she left on my mobile. One of the calling number started with +234 which is the country code from Nigeria. I have never ever before that day received a call from Nigeria. S.
