I am a qualified Chef and want to move to Australia or New Zealand from South Africa. As the profession is on the critical Skills list, I need to know if there are any employers who can sponsor me, or any information about how I can get to apply for the visa. Both myself and my wife we are Chefs. I would be grateful to anyone with information that can assist me.

Hi Chef,

You might be able to find some insights on this Expat Arrivals page on work permits in Australia, and this Expat Arrivals page on visas in New Zealand.

Regarding New Zealand, there are a few different categories on the skills list. From what I can see, the cheffing profession is on the long-term skills shortage list. Thankfully, the New Zealand official immigration website is well designed and will be able to take you through what this means. It also seems like you can apply for the relevant visa through their online system.

For Australia, it looks like your profession falls under a few categories. The Australian visa application also seems to all happen online.

Being a chef seems really practical, so I'm not sure how good online job portals are. Maybe there are recruitment agencies that you can find in either Australia or New Zealand that deal directly with catering?
