I have been offered a job by a Lagos based company as a sales engineer. My experience is 3 years. They offer me $1400. The company guarantees me a 3 bedroom flat, car, driver, telephone other than the salary. Is this a good offer? Please guide me.

Hi, the cost of living in Lagos can be quite high. Although the salary offered doesn't seem quite lucrative, the fact that your accommodation and transport will be provided on top of this should go a long way to helping you save; these are likely to be your biggest expenses in Nigeria. That being said, whether this salary is a good offer, all depends on what you are used to and where you are coming from. I suggest having a read of our Cost of Living in Nigeria page for a general breakdown of what you can expect to pay for the basics in Nigeria, and thus how far the salary will go.

Hi Catherine, What would you suggest as a living expense required for a family including 3 children (8,3,1)? The company is paying for the furnished accomodation, driver and car, schooling and medical. thanks,

Hi Anonymous, the cost of living an expat life in Nigeria can be extremely high, and to be honest, this salary does not seem that lucrative for a family of four. Although your housing and transport will be taken care of, another major expense you need to consider if schooling for your children. You'll need to send them to an international school in Lagos, which can be extremely expensive. Healthcare will also be expensive as you will need to access private medical facilities. You should ensure that your company covers some form of comprehensive medical insurance - bearing in mind that some complex major procedures/emergencies may require medical evacuation to Europe or back to South Africa - so these are factors that you need to consider.

Nevertheless, whether this salary is sufficient for you and your family also all depends on your own lifetsyle and personal expenses, and I suggest you take a look at our Cost of Living in Nigeria page, which gives a break down of what you can expect for your basic monthly goods and services.
